How to Register a Domain Name

Updated

Registering a domain name is the first step to getting your business online. This guide walks you through the process from start to finish, and it takes less than five minutes.

Step 1: Search for your domain

Go to our domain search page and type the name you want. We’ll show you whether it’s available and suggest alternatives if it’s taken.

Tips for choosing a good domain:

  • Keep it short and easy to spell
  • Use your business name if possible
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers, since they’re easy to mistype
  • .com is still the most recognizable extension for most businesses

Step 2: Choose your extension

If your preferred .com isn’t available, consider:

  • .net: a well-known alternative, often available
  • .co: popular with startups and modern businesses
  • .io: common in tech and software businesses
  • .us, .biz, .info: less common but perfectly valid

Step 3: Add to cart and create an account

Once you’ve found the domain you want, select it and continue to the cart. You’ll need to create a MyDomains.tech account (or log in if you already have one) to complete the registration.

Step 4: Enter your contact details

During checkout, you’ll be asked for registrant contact information. With MyDomains.tech, your details are automatically protected with free WHOIS privacy: your personal information is replaced with our privacy proxy in the public WHOIS database.

Step 5: Complete checkout

Choose whether to register for 1 year or multiple years (multi-year registrations often include a small discount). Pay by credit card, and your domain is registered immediately.

What happens next?

Your domain is active right away. DNS propagation (the process of your domain being recognized across the internet) typically completes within 15 to 30 minutes, though it can take up to 48 hours in some cases.

You can now point your domain to a website, set up email, or configure DNS records from your client area.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to register a domain name?
It depends on the extension. A .com is $14.49 per year, .org is $11.49, and .net is $17.49. Newer or specialist extensions cost more, such as .io at $56.49. Some extensions run a low first-year promotional price that renews higher, so check the renewal figure too: .shop is $2.49 to register but $50.49 to renew. Every extension we sell shows its register, renew, and transfer price in our domain extension directory.
How long does it take to register a domain?
Registration itself is instant — the domain is yours the moment checkout completes. DNS propagation, which is what makes the domain resolve across the internet, usually finishes within 15 to 30 minutes and can occasionally take up to 48 hours.
Do I need to buy hosting at the same time as my domain?
No. A domain and hosting are separate products. You can register a domain now and add hosting later, or point the domain at a website you already have hosted elsewhere by updating its DNS records.
Is WHOIS privacy included?
Yes, free of charge on every extension whose registry permits it. Your name, address, phone number, and email are replaced with our privacy proxy in the public WHOIS record, which cuts down on spam and protects your personal details.
What happens if I forget to renew my domain?
Auto-renew is on by default and we email you before the renewal date. If a domain does expire, most extensions have a redemption grace period during which you can recover it, though the registry usually charges a redemption fee. Contact support as soon as you notice.
